Unmasking PHP

There has been a lot of questions from our clients recently regarding PHP and notifications they have been receiving from various vendors of PHP upgrades, PHP being discontinued and what they need to do.

To start with, lets establish what PHP is and where is it used. Then we can look at what the upgrades mean.

Email hosting

Put simply, if you own a domain name and would like to be able to send emails that contain that domain name, you would need to sign up for separate email hosting services.

Some web hosting companies provide you with email hosting as well; however, the email hosting service provided by web hosting companies for the most part only supply you with basic email options and the very basic spam/virus protection, and some of the free email hosting providers are ad-supported.

Shining a light on Domain Names

A domain, or domain name, is an address for the internet. It is like a street address except for your website, email, etc.

How is a website like a light switch?

I find websites like a light switch. When I turn on a light, I expect the light to come on. I know I have to maintain the light bulb and pay my energy bills but I do not care how my light is connected to the electricity grid.

Similarly, when I own a website, I know I have to maintain the website content and security, I need to pay my domain, hosting and security invoices but how everything comes together is just like the light switch. I know there is more to it - but I don't (need to) know the details.

Your website project needs goals - or it will fail

When it comes time to create a website or renew your old website it is critical to establish the  goals of your website.

Some of the questions you should consider include:

  • What problem are you trying to solve?
  • What action would you like people to take?
  • Who are your reaching out to?

Succinct but meaningful goals underpin the long-term success of any website. They should identify the benefits the website will deliver to the organisation as a whole, and should relate to your organisation’s strategic goals.

Ballantyne Safety Launch

We are proud to announce the release of Ballantyne Safety new site.

The site was built from scratch in Drupal 7 mirroring the information that was already available on the old site. Some content was cleaned up during the data entry phase and images were optimised to improve the speed of the site.

The design of the old site was copied as closely as possible and then enhancements to ensure the responsiveness of the website.
